What is Soft Body Armor? How Does Soft Body Armor Work?

Filed Under (soft body armor, tactical vests) by Wayne on 01-02-2009

To most people, soft body armor used in police force and military tactical vests, is somewhat just pure magic that works. A soft piece of cloth that stops or significantly halts the movement of and otherwise deadly bullet.

What makes this soft material, this soft body armor work? It is a very strong, specially woven net of material.

It is like a tennis racket. The racket has a woven network of strings fastened tightly together in its head. When the tennis player swings the racket and hits the ball, it hits the woven face of the racket.

The energy of the ball is absorbed and dispersed through the net from the point of contact of the ball and the woven net. The energy is spread from the single point of impact throughout the entire racket head.

With all the interacting laces of the tennis racket head pulling together, it completely absorbs the force of the ball and the force of the swing provided by the tennis player. This is a lot of force, but the net does not break (at least not with first contact).

Soft body armor is just a very small, and tightly woven version of the same principle. Of course a bullet, is moving much faster, and this is why a soft body armor or tactical vest (bulletproof vests) use such a finely and tightly woven material.

Most common is the kevlar vest. Dupont produces the Kevlar material used in soft body armor vests and there are several others. The most Ready 2 Protect has produced a vest far superior to anything imagined by kevlar vest soft body armor users.

Ready 2 Protect is also perfecting the implanting of nanotubes in soft body armor and tactical vests. Though Ready 2 Protects vest already out perform anything on the market in protection level, weight, lifetime costs, and waterproof capability, the addition of the nano tubes will make their vest unbeatable.

I know this was quick, and I hope it gave a quick and easy to understand insight into soft body armor and bulletproof vests.

Body Armor - Tactical Vest Recall by the Army

Filed Under (body armor) by Wayne on 29-01-2009

Glad you came back, or if your here for the first time, glad you could join us.

Don’t forget to leave comments at the end of the post! Thanks.

Today, the US Army announced the recall of body armor ceramic plates. Over 16,000 plates have been recalled. The reason stated is they believe that they have not been properly tested.

For us, that isn’t a good reason by itself. I wonder, have the plates shown any evidence of not meeting the standard they were purchased to? Has anyone not been properly protected? What has really led to the recall of the body armor ceramic plates?

In the report published by the Washington Times, Sarah A Carter on January 29, 2009, no real evidence was provided as to why the body armor ceramic plates are considered unsafe. It states that no deaths or injuries have been reported due to failures of the equipment.

The body armor ceramic plates in question were purchased between 2005 and 2007. No manufacturer information is provided. We will have to look closely to find what type of equipment this is, specifically.

The report states that the Army will release a report, they claim, through the Inspector General’s Office in the next couple of days. The only “problem” being stated is that the vests were procured without following proper procedure. The report says this occurred in 16 of 28 contracts.

I say what is the problem beyond bureaucrats not being happy with the paperwork? It may well be the case that these armor plates are much superior than the previous ones, and someone was trying to do their best to protect the soldiers with equipment that is superior, that the bureaucrats would hold up for years delaying one test after another, while people died in the field.

So, I hope no one is jumping to conclusions here. This isn’t Zylon all over again. In fact, it still doesn’t appear there is anything actually wrong.

We’ll be looking for more to come.

Stay with us, and leave your comments please.

Easy Way to Pay for Soft Body Armor - Tactical Vests for Police Officers

Filed Under (body armor, soft body armor, tactical vests) by Wayne on 28-01-2009

Thanks for joining us here again.

Please leave comments before you leave.

I know I said I would bring you the information on the Federal programs, but …. the Federal site doesn’t seem to be working at the moment. So…..

I decided to give you another example of how states will provide major assistance in the purchase of soft body armor and tactical vests for their police forces. This one is from North Carolina…

In North Carolina, there is a Saftey Grant and Soft Body Armor Grant Program. The way to have access to it is to participate in the North Carolina League of Municipalities Risk Management Services worker’s compensation program. As a participant, the worker’s compensation program will reimburse 50% of the cost of soft body armor, up to a total cost of $250 per vest. So in reality, that really means, for a quality Level IIIA Ballistic, Level II Knife - Spike protection soft body armor, you can realize a 20- 30% savings.

These grants are available on an ongoing basis, and can be applied for at any time of the year.

Go here for the Application for the North Carolina Soft Body Armor Reimbursement Program

We will continue to scope out the Federal Programs, in the mean time, come back soon, because we promise to have more interesting information and stories regarding soft body armor and tactical vest use.

That’s all for now — Leave a comment below!

Who’s Paying for Soft Body Armor and Tactical Bulletproof Vests?

Filed Under (soft body armor, tactical vests) by Wayne on 26-01-2009

It’s always great to have our regular readers return and our new readers join us.

We also love for you to comment. Tell us what you want to know more about, and we will find out.

Lately we have been looking into who is paying for soft body armor, tactical vests, or bulletproof vests (or whatever is your favorite term). And here is an example of what we found - this one is for soft body armor in the state of New York.

The state of New York has recognized the real need to protect, and offers a way to defer costs of life-saving soft body armor and tactical vests - and deployable shields - through the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Their program is called the Bullet Proof Vest Reimbursement Program.

For this year, it only covers vests for new hires of police officer status, and not peace officers. Now we think this is a real limitation, but nontheless, it still cuts costs for the police force doing the purchases in NY State. There is one little quirk to doing this, but all-and-all, probably worth the effort. The police agency requesting the funding must first apply for the federal funding (we will cover this in a blog post soon).

Good news, the Federal program has a few bonuses… but that will be covered in another post.

So what’s the point? Well if you think it costs too much to save your primary assets lives, and it’s all about dollars to you, then there are ways to help get funds. But we know you are serious about saving lives of police officers, peace officers, military fighting soldiers and marines, and anyone else protecting us from forceful violence.

So keep following us, and we will keep you up to date on the best ways to get the best soft body armor and tactical vests anywhere.

Thanks for coming
