Today, the US Army announced the recall of body armor ceramic plates. Over 16,000 plates have been recalled. The reason stated is they believe that they have not been properly tested.
For us, that isn’t a good reason by itself. I wonder, have the plates shown any evidence of not meeting the standard they were purchased to? Has anyone not been properly protected? What has really led to the recall of the body armor ceramic plates?
In the report published by the Washington Times, Sarah A Carter on January 29, 2009, no real evidence was provided as to why the body armor ceramic plates are considered unsafe. It states that no deaths or injuries have been reported due to failures of the equipment.
The body armor ceramic plates in question were purchased between 2005 and 2007. No manufacturer information is provided. We will have to look closely to find what type of equipment this is, specifically.
The report states that the Army will release a report, they claim, through the Inspector General’s Office in the next couple of days. The only “problem” being stated is that the vests were procured without following proper procedure. The report says this occurred in 16 of 28 contracts.
I say what is the problem beyond bureaucrats not being happy with the paperwork? It may well be the case that these armor plates are much superior than the previous ones, and someone was trying to do their best to protect the soldiers with equipment that is superior, that the bureaucrats would hold up for years delaying one test after another, while people died in the field.
So, I hope no one is jumping to conclusions here. This isn’t Zylon all over again. In fact, it still doesn’t appear there is anything actually wrong.
We’ll be looking for more to come.
Stay with us, and leave your comments please.
